Third place read­ies Epke for worlds

Up-and-com­ing squash player El­lie Epke is prov­ing she has what it takes on the court by fin­ish­ing third in the women’s draw at the North Is­land Squash Cham­pi­onships in Cam­bridge.

The Eden Epsom Squash Club 15-year-old claimed a 12-10 11-3 11-9 win over club-mate Joanna Shanks.

Shanks will be re­turn­ing to Auck­land empty handed af­ter top seed Joelle King got the bet­ter of her in the semi­fi­nals, cruis­ing to an 11-8 11-0 11-7 vic­tory.

King had ear­lier downed New Zealand ju­nior rep­re­sen­ta­tive and Eden Epsom Squash Club player Hay­ley Hughes in four sets.

The tour­na­ment was great prepa­ra­tion for Epke who is one of four play­ers head­ing to the World Ju­nior Girls Squash Cham­pi­onships from July 16 in Poland.
