Lifesaving gear stolen
Surf Life Saving Northern Region has been struck with another theft of vital lifesaving equipment just months after one of its clubs was broken into.
A Yamaha VX700 jetski is missing from the Northern Region headquarters in Mechanics Bay.
Lifesaving and club support manager Tom Burgess says the jetski is used as a rescue water craft and it is a vital piece of res- cue equipment for lifeguards.
‘‘As a charity we can’t easily replace expensive gear like this and we desperately need to get it back in time for summer,’’ he says.
In May, around $60,000 worth of equipment was stolen overnight from the United North Piha gear shed including IRB engines and quad bikes.
Mr Burgess says thefts such as these are thefts from the community and could be the difference between life and death.
‘‘We are urging anyone who has information to contact police immediately,’’ he says.
The jetski is distinctive with yellow and white branding and Surf Rescue in red lettering.
