Saints’ revival sinks Leopards
A 50-metre dropkick on fulltime capped a remarkable comeback for the Marist Saints in their rugby league fixture with the Otahuhu Leopards at the weekend.
The Saints managed an impressive second half comeback to beat the Leopards in a close 33-32 victory in round 16 of the Appliance Shed Fox Memorial Shield on Saturday.
They were up against a pack desperate for points to crack the top four and by halftime were left wondering what had hit them.
Down 28-8, Marist had conceded five tries to the ruthless Leopards.
But Kaleni Fraser came out of the sheds and scored immediately giving his mates some momentum.
A seemingly different Marist forward pack in the second half continued to make in-roads through a non-existent Otahuhu defence and Josh Tamaseu-Russell became a major benefactor.
Two tries in the opening 10 minutes of the second half and the Saints were starting to sense a comeback.
And when Kaleni Fraser powered over to bring it back to 26-28, an almighty comeback was a reality.
When Atelea Nafetalai scored the Otahuhu Leopards thought they had done enough but a missed conversion put a stop to that.
Marist’s JJ Saena then crossed the chalk. The conversion locked things up at 32-32.
In the end it all came down to a drop goal and what better way for the Saints to grab a comeback than to knock over a 50-metre dropkick as the hooter sounded.
Meanwhile the Bay Roskill Vikings suffered another heavy defeat this time at the hands of the Papakura Sea Eagles who racked up the points to defeat the Vikings 56-10. Round 16 Results: Marist Saints 33 (8) V 32 (28) Otahuhu Leopards Papakura Sea Eagles 56 (18) V 10 (0) Bay Roskill Vikings
