Young ref­eree aim­ing high

One of Auck­land’s youngest football ref­er­ees is aim­ing to reach the heights of the Lotto North­ern Re­gion Football League af­ter im­press­ing at a tour­na­ment in Aus­tralia.

Mt Roskill 16-year-old Ai­den Mof­fatt was named as the ref­eree of the tour­na­ment at the Kanga Cup in Can­berra of­fi­ci­at­ing in the un­der18 boys fi­nal on July 12.

The Kanga Cup is an an­nual youth tour­na­ment which draws teams from the around the Pa­cific and Asia.

Auck­land Football use the event as a de­vel­op­ment op­por­tu­nity for youth of­fi­cials.

Mof­fatt of­fi­ci­ates up to two games a week in the Auck­land Football Fed­er­a­tion un­der-19 or lower se­nior grades and is a goal­keeper for Lyn­field Col­lege’s first XI.

Mof­fatt’s suc­cess in Can­berra has changed the way he views his ref­er­ee­ing and al­lowed him to hone his skills, he says.

‘‘It was great to see how oth­ers were ref­er­ee­ing and I’d like to progress it.’’
