Young referee aiming high
One of Auckland’s youngest football referees is aiming to reach the heights of the Lotto Northern Region Football League after impressing at a tournament in Australia.
Mt Roskill 16-year-old Aiden Moffatt was named as the referee of the tournament at the Kanga Cup in Canberra officiating in the under18 boys final on July 12.
The Kanga Cup is an annual youth tournament which draws teams from the around the Pacific and Asia.
Auckland Football use the event as a development opportunity for youth officials.
Moffatt officiates up to two games a week in the Auckland Football Federation under-19 or lower senior grades and is a goalkeeper for Lynfield College’s first XI.
Moffatt’s success in Canberra has changed the way he views his refereeing and allowed him to hone his skills, he says.
‘‘It was great to see how others were refereeing and I’d like to progress it.’’
