Walkers win contest
A five-strong team of racewalkers are leaving their competitors in their dust.
Racewalking Auckland’s A team, comprised of Esther Gonzales, Jared Free, Mike Parker, Mike Morresey and Miguel Angel Blanco Rodriguez, won the Sixth Harry Kerr Centennial 5x10,000 metre Racewalking Track Relay at Mt Smart Stadium on July 14.
In changeable conditions the team managed to finish in 4h 42m 55s, while the Wellington Scottish team could only muster a time of 5h 19m 44s to take second place.
An Auckland Racewalking junior team of Liam White, Ella Breslin and Lilly Breslin took part over a shorter distance of 4400 metres.
A special event, the Kerr Rowland 3500m, was raced over the exact distance that Harry Kerr and Arthur Rowland raced at the 1908 Olympics when Kerr secured New Zealand’s first Olympic medal.
One of Kerr’s grandsons, Craig Kerr, was on hand to present the trophy.
