The new EllersliePanmure Highway bridge is open ahead of schedule.

While it was being built traffic was redirected onto an adjacent bridge that will become a busway.

The bridge is a key part of the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI).

The opening was marked by an event attended by Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee, Auckland Transport chairman Lester Levy and Mayor Len Brown.

‘‘It’s great to see a big project completed three months ahead of schedule. AMETI is an important connection point,’’ Mr Brown says.

‘‘It is critical for us to be timely in the development of these projects.’’

East Tamaki is expected to see considerable growth so good public transport planning is key, he says. Dr Levy agrees. ‘‘Auckland is going to undergo an amazing transformation.’’

But this is not always going to be an easy transition, he says.

‘‘As we undertake all the elements that are necessary to transform transport in Auckland there is disruption, change and alteration,’’ Dr Levi says.
