Driver flees the scene of crash
Police were yesterday still looking for the driver of a stolen car involved in a major crash on Mt Albert Rd.
The car was taken from Helensville and was seen by police travelling at high speed just before it crashed around 1am on Thursday, Avondale Senior Sergeant Ross Endicott-Davies says.
‘‘There was no pursuit. The officer stopped to inform the communications centre that he would try and catch up with it but when he got around the corner the car had left the road and hit a power pole.
‘‘The driver was seen getting out of the window and ran off down the road.’’
One of three passengers also took-off but was later arrested when he turned up at Auckland Hospital.
Another of the passengers was taken to hospital in a serious condition but this was later downgraded and he was expected to be released yesterday.
He and the third passenger have also been arrested.
Diversions were initially in place at the intersections of Mt Albert Rd and Summit Drive, and Mt Albert Rd and Mount Royal Ave. The road was opened early on in the morning but traffic continued to be delayed while the power pole was repaired.
Smashed: The car involved in a serious crash on Mt Albert Rd was earlier stolen from Helensville.
