Driver flees the scene of crash

Po­lice were yes­ter­day still look­ing for the driver of a stolen car in­volved in a ma­jor crash on Mt Al­bert Rd.

The car was taken from He­lensville and was seen by po­lice trav­el­ling at high speed just be­fore it crashed around 1am on Thurs­day, Avon­dale Se­nior Sergeant Ross Endi­cott-Davies says.

‘‘There was no pur­suit. The of­fi­cer stopped to in­form the com­mu­ni­ca­tions cen­tre that he would try and catch up with it but when he got around the cor­ner the car had left the road and hit a power pole.

‘‘The driver was seen get­ting out of the win­dow and ran off down the road.’’

One of three pas­sen­gers also took-off but was later ar­rested when he turned up at Auck­land Hos­pi­tal.

An­other of the pas­sen­gers was taken to hos­pi­tal in a se­ri­ous con­di­tion but this was later down­graded and he was ex­pected to be re­leased yes­ter­day.

He and the third pas­sen­ger have also been ar­rested.

Diver­sions were ini­tially in place at the in­ter­sec­tions of Mt Al­bert Rd and Sum­mit Drive, and Mt Al­bert Rd and Mount Royal Ave. The road was opened early on in the morn­ing but traf­fic con­tin­ued to be de­layed while the power pole was re­paired.
