Foot­baller’s chance to play Europe

Three Kings United defender Abby Erceg is lin­ing up to show her skills in one of the strong­est football leagues in the world af­ter sign­ing with a Euro­pean club.

The New Zealand women’s football cap­tain has signed a one-year deal with Ger­man club USV Jena where she will play with Football Ferns team-mates Ria Per­ci­val and Am­ber Hearn.

Erceg has vir­tu­ally been an ever-present in the national side since her de­but in 2006.

She has al­ready played a sea­son in Europe for Span­ish Su­perliga gi­ants Es­panyol.

‘‘It’s some­thing that I knew I al­ways wanted to do, to go to the best leagues in the world and play over­seas. That I get to do that is very ex­cit­ing,’’ she says.

‘‘It will be great to be able to learn from the play­ers and will be a great chal­lenge for me.’’
