Killer fashion in award finals
A fashion collection inspired by a popular serial-killer novel is in the running for a top award.
Petra Benton’s Wall Street women’s range is one of 10 finalists in the 2013 Westpac Young Fashion Designer competition.
The public can vote until the end of the day on Sunday.
After voting closes the top three designers will be announced.
They will present their work to judges at New Zealand fashion week in September where the overall winner will be announced.
Miss Benton lives in Mt Albert and recently graduated with a bachelor of design.
Wall Street started life as a menswear line spurred on by Brett Easton Ellis’ American Psycho.
The novel follows the life of fictional character Patrick Bateman, a high-flying Manhattan businessman with a penchant for murder.
‘‘When I was reading it I felt the juxtaposition of the strictness in his life and appearance compared with the complete off-kilter nature of his actions,’’ Miss Benton says.
‘‘Menswear is what I had studied and what I love, but I thought it would be more interesting as womenswear.’’
