Aucklanders are being reminded it is illegal to have an open fire in any urban area and public place across the region.

This includes beaches, foreshores, parks, reserves and forests. Rules on outdoor cooking vary between different parks and beaches.

Before you wheel out the barbecue at home give it a quick check to make sure it’s in good order.

The Fire Service is reminding anyone lighting fires to ensure they don’t become a nuisance to others or spread. They should not contain material like tyres, plastics, synthetic materials or treated timber.

‘‘It’s important fires are controlled and supervised at all times as the costs involved in putting out all fires may be passed on to the person responsible,’’ Fire Service principal rural fire officer Bryan Cartelle says.
