Fiesta theme to final art event
A distinctly Mexican flavour will be spicing up Christmas celebrations on K’ Rd.
True to its subversive reputation, the precinct is to abandon tradition in favour of a fiesta theme for its final First Thursdays art event of the year tomorrow.
A roaming Mariachi band, free Day of the Dead face painting, an interactive tunnel and a steam punk vending machine are some of the treats on offer.
‘‘Our Christmas First Thursdays will be more about fun and playfulness rather than getting bogged down with northern hemisphere snowflakes and tradition,’’ event co-ordinator Laura Forest says.
Auckland central burlesque performer ‘‘Amorous Ava’’ will be the face behind the Lucha Libre wrestler mask handing out lollies in St Kevin’s Arcade dressed as her alter-ego ‘‘ La Luchadora’’.
Tomorrow will also mark the launch of K’ Rd’s inaugural light show Highlights.
Virtual displays will be projected on to the precinct’s character buildings over 10 days.
First Thursdays takes place across St Kevin’s, La Gonda and Cross St arcades tomorrow from 6pm to 9pm.
With attitude: The Lucha Libre wrestler is just one of the highlights in an evening filled with Mexican themed entertainment on K Rd.
Bring it: La Luchadora is ready to show regular First Thursdays visitors what she’s made of.
On show: Look out for La Luchadora in St Kevin’s Arcade between 6 and 9pm tomorrow.
Mexican fiesta: Burlesque performer Amorous Ava will become Mexican wrestler La Luchadora tomorrow at First Thursdays.
