Parliament handed pylons petition

A 3000-strong petition calling for the Government to put high voltage transmission lines underground in urban areas has been tabled in Parliament.

The petition was signed by Maungakiekie and Mt Roskill residents who want to see the unsightly pylons and lines that mar the skyline buried.

Labour MPs Phil Goff and Carol Beaumont delivered the petition last week.

‘‘There was overwhelming support from constituents in Mt Roskill and Maungakiekie electorates to burying the pylons,’’ they say.

‘‘Over 90 per cent of people approached to sign the petition readily agreed, describing the pylons as a blot on the landscape.’’

They say the pylons will detract from the new $28 million foreshore being created at Onehunga Bay.

‘‘This hugely detracts from the environment along State Highway 20 which is the gateway to Auckland for visitors to the city. It diminishes the new reserve as an attractive place for locals to enjoy.’’
