The New Zealand Career College (NZCC) is best known for its level 5 diploma in Early Childhood Education.

From the new academic year starting in February they are increasing the number of options in terms of vocational pathways. Two new courses are being offered: Certificate in Early Childhood Education - Level 3, 21 weeks. Under the extended Youth Guarantee scheme, this course is free for 16 to 19 year olds, especially school leavers, plus a travel allowance is available too. Students can also gain an NCEA - Level 2 qualification.

Certificate in Early Childhood Practice – Level 4, 20 weeks. The programme is designed for those who are involved in the care and education of children in a variety of early childhood education settings, including home-based (nannies) education and care centres and playgroups.

The early childhood education sector offers interesting and rewarding opportunities.

‘‘This is among the fastest growing sectors in the country, and graduates from New Zealand are highly valued overseas as well,’’ Monique, Le Marque,

career Campus Manager, NZCC Manukau, says.

It is a measure of how much they are sought after that NZCC graduates are working as educators and supervisors in a number of early childhood centres across the country as well as in Australia.

According to lecturer Pomate Westerlund, the main reason students do well at NZCC is due to the excellent individualised academic support available to them from their lecturers and tutors who have both academic and industry based experience.

The campus offers a relaxed environment where students can find a friend, guide or mentor in their tutor or lecturer.

Pomate points out that where NZCC differs is it has an open door policy where former students are mentored and monitored.

‘‘The connection

is never lost,’’ she says.

NZCC is accepting intakes for courses starting in February.
