Auckland City FC ready for Fifa finals encounter
Auckland City FC are primed and dangerous ahead of their Fifa Club World Cup Finals encounter with Raja Casablanca in Morocco tomorrow.
Ramon Tribulietx’s Navy Blues take on the host nation champions at the Agadir Stadium from 8.30am.
The winning team will play Mexican champions CF Monterrey on Sunday morning in the quarterfinal of the tournament.
Raja sacked their coach just before the tournament so it will be a big test for the new coach with US$500,000 prizemoney at stake.
Auckland’s preparations for the tournament took them to Barcelona late last week, where the team spent three days as guests of the La Liga club RCD Espanyol.
City played a friendly international against their hosts during the stay and the Spanish professionals only edged them out by a 1-0 scoreline.
The Auckland team has been buoyed by this result even though it marked their first loss in 14 pre-season and ASB Premiership fixtures in their campaign.
City have travelled more than 36,000km and played in seven countries on four continents to be part of Thursday’s fixture. The match will be shown live on Sommet Sports (Freeview channel 14).
The weekend’s ASB Premiership results have kept City at the top of the table with their nearest rivals, Waitakere United, dropping points and trailing Auckland on goal difference.
Back bender: Auckland’s Mitchell McClenaghan gives it his all.
On form: Auckland coach Ramon Tribulietx is preparing his team for their game against Raja Casablanca tomorrow.
Matt Quinn of the Aces winds back.
