Pre­scrip­tions on the rise

Doc­tors will be is­su­ing more Auck­lan­ders with Green Pre­scrip­tions in another push for peo­ple to lead healthy life­styles.

More than 85,000 peo­ple will re­ceive sup­port over the next four years en­cour­ag­ing them to get ac­tive and eat healthier af­ter a $7.2 mil­lion gov­ern­ment in­vest­ment in the ini­tia­tive.

The pro­gramme sees health pro­fes­sion­als pre­scribe pa­tients with a Green Pre­scrip­tion mak- ing them el­i­gi­ble for sup­port and ad­vice through phone calls, face-to-face con­tact or ac­tiv­ity groups. It was first in­tro­duced in 1998.

A sur­vey by the Min­istry of Health re­ports the scheme has helped thou­sands of peo­ple im­prove their health.

Health Min­is­ter Tony Ryall says 60 per cent of peo­ple are now spend­ing more time be­ing ac­tive and 65 per cent have made pos­i­tive changes to their diet.
