No dream – it’s a white Christmas
Who would have thought snow would fall in Epsom for Christmas?
Kohia Terrace School is one of 11 Auckland schools and kindergartens that got snowed out last week courtesy of Big Buddy mentor special effects expert Jason Durrey.
Snow-like foam was sprayed over playgrounds and trees before students were let loose to enjoy their own version of a white Christmas. The non-toxic foam gradually dissolves leaving no mess behind.
The Big Buddy Mentoring programme provides fatherless boys with solid male role models. Carefully screened mentors spend two to three hours a week with their little buddies, aged between 7 and 14, doing the things they enjoy.
Mr Durrey started the snow day at his little buddy Bradley’s school in 2009.
Many of this year’s schools are low decile.
‘‘The kids at Bradley’s school got such a blast out it – they went ballis- tic — so I decided to do something for kids who don’t necessarily have a lot to cheer about at Christmas. Now it’s the
best day of my year.’’
