Win puts City at the top of table
Auckland City kicked off their 2014 campaign on Sunday with a 3-2 win over Team Wellington – a result which puts the Navy Blues back at the top of the ASB Premiership table.
Home team striker Emiliano Tade opened the scoring at Kiwitea St from the penalty spot in the 10th minute after City’s David Browne was taken down by Wellington and left the field with a broken collarbone.
Wellington came desperately close to being on level terms early in the second half with a diving header from Hamish Watson only just being kept out by Tamati Williams, Mario Bilen and Angel Berlanga.
It sparked a counter-attack with Ryan de Vries deftly lobbing home over the stranded Jacob Spoonley a mere 30 seconds later.
When Tade thumped home a third just after the hour mark, the game appeared up for the visitors.
Wellington changed their tactics during the second spell and scored two goals in as many minutes from Henry Fa’arodo and Charlie Henry inside the final 10 minutes of the match.
But the consistent title contenders held on to prevail 3-2, despite substitute Adam Dickinson being sent off in stoppage time.
City will head to John Kerkhof Park in Cambridge on Saturday to take on Waikato Bay of Plenty United.
