If anyone knows how to live frugally, it’s Frank Newman.

Mr Newman and his wife Muriel wrote the successful book Living Off the Smell of an Oily Rag in New Zealand in 2008.

The couple’s Oily Rag website, which has more than 5000 members, has tips on everything from gardening and recycling to cooking and shopping while their blog at centralleader.co.nz also gives valuable saving advice.

Mr Newman, who lives in Tutukaka near Whangarei, says every little food saving adds up.

‘‘Even though each saving made seems quite small, when you put them together they’re quite large.

‘‘If you can save 5 per cent of every purchase you make in your lifetime you will save a massive amount.’’

His top four tips are:

Grow your own vegetables and herbs Buy what is in season Shop around Buy what’s on special.

Frugal fella: Frank Newman is a wealth of knowledge on being thrifty.
