Kiwi accepted to pilot programme
Sam Malur is flying high after becoming the first New Zealander to be accepted into Qatar Wings.
The pilot training programme will see the 21-year-old placed with one of the Middle East’s largest airlines upon completion.
‘‘I have aspired to be a pilot ever since I was young. Being accepted into Qatar Wings really is a dream come true,’’ Mr Malur says.
The programme was announced by CTC Aviation as open to international applicants, including New Zealanders, in June 2013.
The Lynfield resident will train for 18 months at CTC Aviation facilities in New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
He will then complete advanced training at Qatar Airways in Doha.
For the last two years Mr Malur has studied towards a bachelor of science at Auckland University. However, career plans changed when he saw CTC Aviation was recruiting for Qatar Airways.
‘‘The Qatar Wings opportunity couldn’t be more perfect. Despite having had no flying experience, I knew I had to apply.’’
CTC Aviation acting managing director Julian So says the programme offers a chance for people to work with one of the world’s top airlines.
‘‘The opportunity for New Zealanders to join a Gulf airline as a new entrant pilot is virtually unheard of,’’ he says.
Mr Malur was joined last week by five others from around the world at CTC Aviation’s Crew Training Centre in Hamilton.
