Gabrielle Fa’amausili is not like most other teens.

The 14-year-old Mt Eden swimmer took home the Westpac Emerging Talent award at the 51st Westpac Halberg Awards, held at Vector Arena on February 13.

The honour came with a hefty $10,000 sporting scholarship.

Fa’amausili edged out surfer Ella Williams, rower Tom Murray and motorcyclist Jake Lewis in the category.

The award was designed to identify and assist a young athlete on their quest to become an Olympic, Paralympic or world champion in their chosen discipline.

Since the age of 10 Fa’amausili has been breaking Auckland, New Zealand and world swimming records.

The youngster claimed gold at the FINA World Championships for the 50m backstroke in 2013. Her heat time of 28.14 seconds at the competition was both a New Zealand Open and world championship record.

Getting noticed: Gabrielle Fa’amausili has a bright future in swimming.
