I travel by bike when I can and I imagine a lot more people would travel around Auckland in this way if it were safer. Just this past Friday night I came across a cyclist who was hit and suffered a serious head injury on a poorly-lit section of Dominion Rd.
I was pleased to read that the NZ Transport Agency has committed funds to improving cyclists’ safety in this area. What confuses me, though, is the means by which it proposes to do so.
Creating a cycle lane along Dominion Rd would vastly enhance cycle safety and encourage more people to bike to and from work or school. It would, however, involve expensive road widening.
