Cy­cle safety

On Fe­bru­ary 28 the Cen­tral Leader pub­lished an ar­ti­cle about the cre­ation of a cy­cle net­work around Do­min­ion Rd.

I travel by bike when I can and I imag­ine a lot more people would travel around Auck­land in this way if it were safer. Just this past Fri­day night I came across a cy­clist who was hit and suf­fered a se­ri­ous head in­jury on a poorly-lit sec­tion of Do­min­ion Rd.

I was pleased to read that the NZ Trans­port Agency has com­mit­ted funds to im­prov­ing cy­clists’ safety in this area. What con­fuses me, though, is the means by which it pro­poses to do so.

Cre­at­ing a cy­cle lane along Do­min­ion Rd would vastly en­hance cy­cle safety and en­cour­age more people to bike to and from work or school. It would, how­ever, in­volve ex­pen­sive road widen­ing.
