Do you have any suggestions on how Auckland Council can reduce its carbon footprint?

Public submissions are open on the draft Low Carbon Action Plan. More than 150 companies and organisations have been consulted on the plan which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent by 2040.

The plan sets out a 30-year pathway and a 10-year plan of action. The five key areas include the way we travel, use and generate energy, our built environment and green infrastructure, waste disposal, forestry, agriculture and natural carbon assets.

Environment, climate change and natural heritage committee chairman, councillor Wayne Walker, says Auckland has a crucial role to play.

‘‘Cities are estimated to account for up to 80 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Low Carbon Auckland therefore sets out a very bold target of reducing . . . emissions by 40 per cent, ‘‘ he said.

The plan is open for feedback until April 7 and the final action plan will be adopted in June.
