More than 2000 people took to Motutapu Island on Saturday for the Partners Life DUAL Motutapu – Rangitoto Traverse.

The event includes full marathon and half marathons, 35 kilometres and 45km mountain bike rides and a 6km or 10km run/walk.

The DUAL drew a diverse range of people from all walks of life including some from as far afield as Hong Kong and California who travelled to New Zealand specifically to take part.

‘‘It was so fantastic to see so many families and groups of friends soaking up the incredible views and enjoying time together,’’ organiser Nicola Carter says.

As the only multisport event to take place on a pest-free island sanctuary mountain bikers took advantage of the fact it’s the only day of the year that bikes can be ridden on the island.

The mountain bike events were extremely popular again this year and more than 400 bikes joined in.

‘‘Everyone took advantage of the stunning weather and enjoyed the tranquil surroundings of Home Bay on Motutapu following their race where a free concert provided the perfect ending to a top-notch day.’’

The Partners Life DUAL supports the work of the Motutapu Restoration Trust on the Island and will take place again in 2015.

Special event: Marathon runners take part in the DUAL Motutapu - Rangitoto Traverse.
