Newcomers to fishing are being put to the test.

The Z Pier Auckland Fishing Classic kicks off on May 11 at Westhaven with the aim of encouraging more kids into the sport.

Competitors can fish from land, private boat, Z pier charter vessels or a barge which can take up to 200 children with supervision, Waterfront Auckland says.

Marinas manager Tom Warren says the event is the first of its kind in NZ.

‘‘The beauty of the Z Pier Auckland Fishing classic is that it will be open to all ages and stages regardless whether you have a boat or not.

‘‘The Hauraki Gulf is such a fantastic asset for the city and all Aucklanders should have the chance to catch a fish from the local waters. This is our chance to encourage that and in the process promote sustainable fishing and the importance of nurturing our depleted fish stocks,’’ Warren says.

Fishing veteran and coorganiser Joe Dennehy says the event has huge potential.

‘‘This is our chance to create a new Auckland tradition and a family friendly sporting event for all to share in,’’ he says.

Good catch: Participants in the Z Pier Auckland Fishing Classic will be hoping to reel in some good sized snapper.
