Dunedin and Wellington councils were the first to go fair trade in 2009.

Three Kings resident Sam Drumm helped persuade Auckland Council to switch to fair trade products through his role as chairman of the Fair Trade Auckland City Trust three years later.

Since then the council has used 2 million cups of fair trade coffee from 10,905kg of beans and 1430kg of instant coffee.

Council staff have consumed nearly 2800kg of fair trade hot chocolate and used more than 1.2 million fair trade tea bags.
