Walking from Cape Reinga to Wellington is a big adventure.

But Mt Eden’s Maris O’Rourke took on the Te Araroa track and turned her journey into an inspiring children’s book.

The author and her husband Greg Mace walked the 1696 kilometre track in sections over two years.

The pair have almost 40 years.

O’Rourke says they completed the Taumaranui to Wellington section in February.

They hope to do the South Island section next Christmas.

O’Rourke says she hopes to instill the same qualities in young readers through Lillibutt the kune kune pig.

The children’s book Lillibutt’s Te Araroa Adventure sees the adventurous pig tackle unexpected obstacles on her long walk from Cape Reinga to Auckland Zoo.

It is the second Lillibutt story O’Rourke has written.
