Proud ‘sisters’ bring home tag gold
They’ve finally done it.
The Wesley Intermediate School girls tag team took Auckland champs by storm in April when they dominated the 120-student competition and came home with gold for the first time.
They are now fundraising to get to NZCT AIMS Games, effectively the national champs, which will also be a first for the Mt Roskill school.
Coach Trevor Ball says the team has gone from strength to strength.
They have won back-toback central zone champs in the past two years and deserved to go on and win the Auckland competition, he says.
‘‘We had been working so hard for so long. To go down and win it was such an outstanding feat.
‘‘They are such a neat bunch of kids. They should be so proud of themselves.’’
The school has always had the talent but has struggled with funding in the past to get to top competitions.
Competing in the AIMS competition would be a huge step, he says.
It will cost about $6000 but the experience would be worth it for the team, he says.
‘‘It’s been frustrating over the years, we have the talent but there’s no money to get there. It would be awesome for the girls.’’
Captain Summer Kapsin says the win cemented the team’s hard work for the past two years.
‘‘It’s about together.
‘‘We’re all sisters and we can’t do it by ourselves.
‘‘Humility and integrity is our team motto. We’re so proud. We were really happy we won but we stayed humble.’’
Teamwork is the most important part of the group, player Angel Potoi says. ‘‘We pick each other up. ‘‘It’s about attitude. Even when we’re facing bad sportsmanship, we ignore it and give our school a good name.
‘‘We always respect the opposition.’’
Principal Nigel Davis says the team has made the small school proud.
The group of girls also played together in the central zone softball competition and won it this year, he says.
‘‘It’s just an amazing result.
‘‘It has helped to lift the whole spirit of the school, especially when you are such a small school.’’
