ROAD SAFETY WEEK
Encouraging people not to multi-task at the wheel is the focus of Road Safety Week, which runs until May 26.
The initiative is coordinated by Brake, the road safety charity, with support from Auckland Transport, the New Zealand Transport Agency and the police.
AA spokesman Dylan Thomsen says New Zealand has higher rates of road deaths and injuries than many other developed countries.
‘‘Getting people to think more about their choices and actions on the roads is a really important part of improving road safety.’’
Acting national road policing manager Inspector Peter McKennie says being distracted behind the wheel can be deadly.
More than 500 schools, companies and community groups are getting involved in the week-long initiative by running awarenessraising events.
