Countdown to world cup
Football supporters and fans will get the chance to take part in Auckland’s one year to go celebration on May 30 at Aotea Square from noon.
The official 12 month countdown to the FIFA Under-20 World Cup will kick off 50 minutes later and will be complemented by ticket giveaways and various activities.
A number of football celebrities will be present and fans will get the chance to be photographed with the FIFA Under-20 World Cup Trophy.
The 2015 event will be the largest football tournament ever stag- ed in New Zealand and will take place from May 30 to June 20 with 24 countries participating.
A total of 52 matches will be played in seven host cities.
The opening match will be played at North Harbour Stadium along with the closing ceremony, four pool matches, a quarter and semifinal, the bronze medal playoff and the final.
The event is expected to bring around $6 million into the Auckland’s economy and expose the region to a worldwide television audience of 170 million in more than 100 countries.
