Safer option

Central Leader - - NEWS -

I am a regular patron of Eden Park and have been concerned with a safety issue of a barrier behind the South Stand and Cricket Avenue.

This barrier has not been opened for fixtures and patrons either have to exit/enter through a small gap or climb over the barrier. Someone will soon get seriously hurt.

On June 6, prior to the test match I took photos of this area, took them to the Eden Park receptionist and explained my concerns. She in turn telephoned the operations manager, and repeated my comments.

The answer was ‘‘that he was not going to open the barrier as cars might try and get through’’. There are bollards at the Cricket Aveend to stop vehicular traffic!

I did raise the issue with the Police who advised me that they Eden Park Trust replies:

Eden Park Trust thanks John for his concern and interest.

He raised the issue with us on the weekend, and our Operations Manager was able to talk with him about it.

These gates are always opened for large events at the park, but last Saturday they were opened slightly later than usual.

They were also open for the egress of patrons from the park after the game.

We do not believe any patron safety was compromised, but will make sure that the gates are opened in plenty of time in the future.
