Three-quar­ters of the coun­cil’s 80 rangers work in Auck­land’s 26 re­gional parks such as the Waitakere and Hunua ranges.

They carry out a va­ri­ety of tasks in­clud­ing de­vel­op­ing and main­tain­ing park in­fra­struc­ture, weed and pest man­age­ment, nat­u­ral and cul­tural her­itage man­age­ment and pro­tec­tion, co­or­di­nat­ing vol­un­teers and de­liv­er­ing ed­u­ca­tion pro­grammes.

Auck­land re­gional parks span 43,000 hectares. That’s: 150km of un­de­vel­oped coast­line 1500 hectares of farm land 10,000 camp sights 550km of tracks 9 his­toric home­steads 127 his­toric struc­tures and build­ings 1120 recorded his­toric sites 80,000 hours of vol­un­teer ef­fort.
