Antonia comes alive
An 11-year-old has won a main role in the international stage production of The Sound of Music.
Antonia Robinson is one of three girls playing Brigitta in the show opening in Auckland on October 3.
The musical, loosely based on the real story of the singing von Trapp family who fled the Nazi regime in Austria for the United States, stars an international cast and includes 18 New Zealand children.
The Mt Albert resident’s reaction to the news she’d got the part was something to remember.
‘‘I was on my feet yelling and whooping and screaming, in fact I woke my younger sister in all the hullabaloo of hugs and kisses and she came out thinking something was wrong,’’ she says.
The audition process was ‘‘gruelling’’, her dad Daron Robinson says, but that was to be expected when more than 1000 children took part.
‘‘At first I felt really nervous and scared,’’ Antonia says. ‘‘Once I’d made it through my weak points like dancing, I started to enjoy it.’’
Music runs in the family. Her father was a heavy metal singer in the 1980s.
‘‘She kept getting past all the barriers . . . made it past the first cut, then second cut and she made it out of all those children, ’’ he says.
They read the congratulatory email four times because they couldn’t believe it.
‘‘I’m extremely proud. She was incredibly thrilled . . . but I know it’s going to be a lot of hard work,’’ he says.
Antonia is in the Auckland Girls Choir and is pretty confident in front of a crowd.
Antonia has just been on holiday in Europe with her siblings James and Sophia. The trio performed at pubs in the Yorkshire Dales in England.
All three sing and James plays piano. They sang classics such as What a Wonderful World and Amazing Grace.
‘‘It is a really good learning curve for me getting used to performing and practicing for an audience. I am also learning from my mistakes and trying to improve,’’ Antonia says. She is excited to start rehearsals. ‘‘I am really looking forward to performing to friends and family and also practising and learning new things about acting, dancing and singing.’’
