Fairfax is right neighbourly
Fairfax Media NZ, publisher of the Central Leader, has bought a stake in Kiwi-founded neighbourhood website neighbourly.co.nz.
The size of the shareholding and the price paid were not disclosed.
Neighbourly, which offers free, private websites for suburbs across New Zealand where neighbours can share local information, launched in June and has more than 60,000 members across 1400 suburbs.
Neighbourly members log on to see news relevant to their community, for community notices, what’s happening in their sub- urb, and what people in the local area want to buy, sell or exchange.
The purchase adds a strong social media offering to the Fairfax portfolio, managing director Simon Tong says.
‘‘It’s a great addition to our portfolio, and a longterm investment with an option to deepen the partnership.’’
The site is presently active in 45 per cent of suburbs.
Members use the site to exchange recommendations on local services, plan events, buy, sell and give away items, ask questions, discuss community issues, find lost pets and get to know one another.
