Central Leader - - OPINION -

The Puketapapa Local Board supports strong action against people who deliberately or negligently despoil our natural environment and we are pleased that Auckland Council has succeeded in prosecuting the negligent company, which has recently been fined $42,750 in the District Court.

Most people and companies behave responsibly, and it is disappointing when the actions of a few cause so much damage. We hope this fine helps to deter future negligence of this kind.

The Wairaki Stream spill was spotted early and the damage limited because it was spotted by Friends of Oakley creek co-ordinator Wendy Johns. Local residents can report spills or other pollution to the council by calling 377 3107.
