I have just read Fiona Allen’s letter in last week’s Manukau Courier and her frustration at stupid and arrogant people regarding their rubbish bins and recycling.
This letter ought to have been in every newspaper, though I fear that the ones who need to read it are probably too stupid to do so.
I however believe at least half the blame for Auckland’s rubbish problem must go to corporates and business.
There is so much packaging now with even the smallest item and it is of the sort that cannot be recycled, it is no wonder bins are overflowing. My household refuses to purchase goods with excess packaging and we will leave packaging at a shop to make a point when possible. It’s most amusing to watch the shopkeeper’s expression when you remove the item and leave cardboard, foam and plastic on the counter. If enough people did this, the message would soon hit home.
I would also like to ask why we don’t have a return fee on bottles and cans at point of sale. Years ago streets were free of bottles because kids returned them for the refund. I believe that if you package any item
