Hard-fought win for City
Auckland City FC will go into this weekend’s top of the table clash against Team Wellington as favourites after a scratchy 4-2 win over Southern United at Kiwitea Street on Sunday.
The home side scored twice within the first five minutes off the back of Ryan de Vries pace.
Southern’s Jude Fitzpatrick turned the ball into his own net for the first goal followed by City’s David Browne tucking the second goal home on the far post.
Southern didn’t look like the bottom-placed team coming back at the Navy Blues through the boot of Will McIntyre.
Browne restored City’s two-goal advantage three minutes after halftime with de Vries once again setting it up. Southern bounced back yet again to reduce the deficit to one.
In the dying minutes of the game Marco Dordevic put the game beyond doubt volleying home a corner to clinch the win for Auckland.
City take on second-placed Team Wellington this Sunday at Kiwitea Street from 2pm.
Noodle scratcher: Auckland’s Captain Ivan Vicelich uses his head to clear the ball.
