Quicker bus trip to CBD

Central Leader - - NEWS -

Commuters will have one less reason to take the car to work with a new bus lane opening on Symonds St this week.

For the 6000 passengers who travel along the city’s second busiest bus corridor it will mean saving up to four minutes off their morning commute.

The lane will operate between Charlotte St on New North Rd to Alex Evans St on Symonds St between 7am and 9am.

Auckland Transport’s Public Transport Group manager Mark Lambert says buses are key to using road space more efficiently.

‘‘In Auckland buses make up 2.5 per cent of vehicles but carry nearly a third of commuters into the city.’’

The Symonds St bus lane is a part of a frequent service network encompassing 38 routes, mainly on arterial and collector roads.

The 2014 and 2015 financial year targets about 15 kilometres of bus and transit lane implementation across the network. Another 25km is programmed for the next two financial years.

Faster service: A bus lane is now in place along Symonds St during the morning rush hour.
