VetCare takes over Unitec teaching hospital

Veterinary nurse Courtney Scales has come full circle.

Since graduating from Unitec with a Diploma in Veterinary Nursing, Courtney has enjoyed a varied and exciting career, including nursing at a senior level in several busy central Auckland practices and working in the marketing team of a large veterinary group consisting of 25 clinics across New Zealand.

Eight years on from graduating, she has returned to the Unitec Mt Albert campus, where she studied, in a new role as head nurse of the newly refurbished, onsite teaching hospital.

VetCare Unitec took over the premises in late 2014. Courtney and senior veterinarian, Dr Justine Alley, were handpicked by VetCare director Dr Alex Melrose – an offer Courtney says was too good to refuse.

As well as leading the nursing team, Courtney will also mentor and work alongside more than 50 budding veterinary nurse students as they get their first taste of working life in a real clinic.

‘‘They will get real situations, with real patients and real clients,’’ she says.

As the head nurse, the hands-on tutoring will fall to Courtney who says she is excited by the chance to give back to the profession she is ‘‘crazily passionate’’ about.

The teaching hospital allows students to build on the theory and introduction to practical work they gain in lectures and in Unitec’s veterinary simulation clinic.

The clinic has been remodelled and fitted out with new equipment and machinery, and what was previously a lunch room has been trans formed into a teaching space, where they hope to have people from the veterinary profession come to speak with students.

Unitec Natural Sciences head of department, Professor Linton Winder, says the refreshed VetCare Unitec clinic is a great addition for both students and the community.

‘‘Pet owners can be happy in the knowledge that not only are their friends being well cared for, but that they are helping train the veterinary nurses of the future,’’ he says.
