Smoked out

Central Leader - - LETTERS -

I wonder whether when or if the council has any plans to further restrict or ban smoking outside.

I love my job, but have the misfortune to work in Dominion Rd in the Balmoral shopping area.

Every day I run the gauntlet of business owners and patrons smoking at their front doors and blowing their smoke into the air.

It permeates into our office even with the front door shut.

There is a council worker who picks up stray litter but the pavement and roadsides are littered with cigarette butts, these people do not care about the environment, keeping it tidy, or other people.

The cigarettes have a very strong smell, further adding to the nonenjoyment of working in the area. Yuck! New Zealand. Thousands of dollars spent over the last 20 years on socalled ‘‘community liaison’’ between concerned residents, quarry owners Fletchers and the council has come to nothing as the SHA takes precedence.

Even the local board is a pawn and powerless to act as the ‘‘big brother’’.

Senior council staff, Fletchers and the Government dictate to a community fed up with hypocrisy.

Big smoke: Has smoking in public spaces had its day?
