Youths wanted after laundromat robbery
Police are looking for five youths who robbed an Avondale Laundromat at gunpoint on April 26.
Five male offenders, wearing gloves and hoods, ran into Ezy Laundromat on St Georges Rd at about 6.30pm. Images released by police show one offender pointing a black handgun at a staff member while another carried a hammer.
Detective Sergeant Mark Osbourne says the gun appears to be an imitation.
‘‘There are so many imitation firearms out there and these kids can get hold of them so easily and use them with the intention to scare people,’’ he says.
Osbourne says the staff member was forced to hand over the till. The offenders fled with $150 and the victim’s phone.
The victim was left uninjured but shaken by the ordeal.
No-one else was at the laundromat when the incident occurred.
An Ezy Laundromat employee says another staff member had gone home just before the robbery because there hadn’t been many customers.
Police are appealing for sightings of a vehicle seen leaving the scene and caught on CCTV footage between Wolverton St and St Georges Rd.
The vehicle is described as an old style VL Commodore or Nissan Cefiro, with chrome mag wheels.
‘‘We can’t make out the number plate but the vehicle is quite distinctive, especially if young kids are driving around in it,’’ Osbourne says.
‘‘I’m sure someone’s mum will recognise their son.’’
