Pure and simple this Mother’s Day

Central Leader - - NEWS -

‘Keep things simple’ is a good phrase to keep in mind when choosing a piece of jewellery to cel- ebrate Mother’s Day on May 10.

In fashion, as in life, it’s often the uncomplicated things that make all the difference. And for mum’s special day this year it’s evident jewellery manufacturers are showing a preference for delicate pastels in their designs; the kind you would find on a baby’s blanket – powder blue, blush pink, soft turquoise, mint green and pale lemon.

Interpreted into gems this means aquamarine (blue to slightly greenish blue), blue and yellow sapphires, turquoise, rose quartz, kunzite (pastel pink to violet), topaz, moonstone (billowy blue) and citrine. Cubic zirconia comes in all the colours of the rainbow and don’t forget the delicate pearl. Especially those with a peachy champagne twist.

Favoured motifs include hearts, circles and ovals and repeating patterns of geometric links.

In pendants and earrings look for designs within designs, such as a series of concentric circles or hearts within hearts. Rings have soft shapes, with smooth, domed cabochons in oval and round contours.

Seriously cool chain is always a winner. This season will feature longer chains and multiple pendants on one chain And as longer layers take off, paradoxically a 1970’s trend is resurfacing, closer to the throat. Chokers are certainly up-and-coming. But remember to think of the end wearer, older women often prefer a longer chain to take away the emphasis to the neck.

Mismatched earrings are continuing to gain popularity. They got the sign of approval from actress Scarlett Johansson, who walked the red carpet at the 2015 Oscars wearing an emerald green Swarovski crystal embroidered collar, paired with a gold and emerald earring visible below the ear lobe and an ear cuff.

Design often merges with nature, so expect collections to feature a botanical or zoological reference of some kind, for example, the latest additions to Karen Walker’s The Rock Garden collection or Najo’s silver cicada necklace.
