Fireworks suspected

The mysterious source of loud bangs puzzling an urban neighbourhood may have been solved.

An unexplained noise has been heard many times in the Auckland suburbs of Hillsborough and Onehunga over the past month, and has been described as a loud explosion.

Residents now speculate that fireworks are the source.

Hillsborough resident Mathias Gomes says he saw smoke from fireworks after hearing a loud ‘‘bang’’ late on May 1. ‘‘I did see an extremely large mushroom-like [cloud] form high in the sky, comprised of smoke.’’

Gomes says the noise came from Hillsborough Cemetery.

Pam Drake posted on the Neighbourly website that someone let off commercial fireworks in the cemetery.

‘‘We heard the booms and saw the fireworks from our bedroom window,’’ she wrote.

Carol-Anne Armitage says she heard the bangs in Mangere Bridge one night and saw two fireworks being set off.
