CAR THIEF CAUGHT

Po­lice have ar­rested a pro­lific thief ac­cused of spend­ing the past two years steal­ing from un­locked cars parked in garages and drive­ways in Auck­land. The 49-year-old home­less man was ar­rested on July 20 and charged with amin­i­mum of 54 frau­drelated charges in re­la­tion to thefts of cred­its cards and valu­ables from cars in Re­muera, Ep­som and Mead­ow­bank. Nga­puhi Rd in Re­muera was tar­geted a num­ber of times. Po­lice had been on the hunt for the man af­ter he failed to ap­pear in court on fraud charges in Fe­bru­ary. Sergeant Rhys Smith says the of­fender al­legedly chose un­locked cars so he didn’t need to break win­dows to get into the ve­hi­cle. There have also been re­ports of lap­tops and phones al­legedly stolen from cars.
