Glaucoma is a group of diseases which damage the eye’s optic nerve over time. The nerve fibres die which initially takes away a per- son’s peripheral or side vision.
Kiwis are being encouraged to proactively discuss family eye health due to the strong hereditary link to the disease and have regular eye exams. These are the best preventative measures that can be taken against glaucoma, the ‘silent thief of sight’.
Glaucoma New Zealand recommends an eye examination every five years from the age of 45 and every three years from the age of 60. You are also at high risk if you are 60 years and over, are short sighted, have a past or present use of steroid drugs, or have suffered from an eye injury. However, at any age, if you notice changes in your eyesight then an examination is recommended.
