Owner claims lost thousands
A young woman who unwittingly dropped thousands of dollars on a street in a busy Auckland suburb has claimed what was rightfully hers.
A member of the public found the substantial amount of money on a street in Mt Eden Village on June 25.
The honest citizen handed in the loot to police who immediately put the call out for the rightful owner.
A police spokeswoman confirmed on Thursday the young woman whose money it was claimed the cash, which was many thousands of dollars, two days later.
A friend of hers saw a police appeal on the Chinese website, Skykiwi.
The woman was unwell at the time and did not realise she had dropped the money, police said.
In order to make sure the rightful owner was found, police did not say what the exact amount was or exactly where found.
If the owner had not come forward, the finder could have claimed the money after 90 days.
The owner asked for the contact details of the good samaritan so she could say thanks in person, the police spokeswoman said.
Inspector Grant Tetzlaff, from Avondale Police Station, said a ‘‘very honest’’ member of the public had found the cash.
