Owner claims lost thou­sands

A young wo­man who un­wit­tingly dropped thou­sands of dol­lars on a street in a busy Auck­land sub­urb has claimed what was right­fully hers.

A mem­ber of the pub­lic found the sub­stan­tial amount of money on a street in Mt Eden Vil­lage on June 25.

The hon­est cit­i­zen handed in the loot to po­lice who im­me­di­ately put the call out for the right­ful owner.

A po­lice spokes­woman con­firmed on Thurs­day the young wo­man whose money it was claimed the cash, which was many thou­sands of dol­lars, two days later.

A friend of hers saw a po­lice ap­peal on the Chi­nese web­site, Skykiwi.

The wo­man was un­well at the time and did not re­alise she had dropped the money, po­lice said.

In or­der to make sure the right­ful owner was found, po­lice did not say what the ex­act amount was or ex­actly where found.

If the owner had not come for­ward, the finder could have claimed the money af­ter 90 days.

The owner asked for the con­tact de­tails of the good sa­mar­i­tan so she could say thanks in per­son, the po­lice spokes­woman said.

In­spec­tor Grant Tet­zlaff, from Avon­dale Po­lice Sta­tion, said a ‘‘very hon­est’’ mem­ber of the pub­lic had found the cash.
