Expect more stars like Sonny Bill Williams to come out of Wesley Intermediate School in the future.

Traditionally a strong rugby league school, Wesley has produced stars like dual-international Williams, former All Black and Kiwi Matthew Ridge, and NRL stars Steve Matai and Anthony Winterstein.

Williams helped Wesley win the Auckland rugby and rugby league title during that time.

The school’s head of sports Simon Tafea says talent scouts are constantly at their doorstep looking for the next best Auckland, and possibly New Zealand, sports star.

‘‘Wesley is traditionally a strong league school and have won Auckland titles four times in the past five years,’’ he says.

‘‘Our coach [Trev Ball] is a past semi-professional league player, but this year we have had a core group of three adults supporting the coaching of key positions. Students have also received specialist fitness coaching via The Wall facility in a warehouse close to the school.

‘‘The fitness level definitely came to the fore in the final where the boys won 28-8 against Glen Eden in the open weight grade of the Auckland League Championship.’’

Tafea says despite their 130 student population, the decile 1 school is achieving great results on the sports fields Auckland-wide.
