AUCKLAND VISITOR TAX FLOATED

Central Leader - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE -

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff says he will freeze rate rises and introduce a visitor levy. The visitor levy could raise up to $30 million - taking the burden off ratepayers and funding marketing to attract Auckland visitors and supporting major events, Goff claims. Goff wants Auckland councillors to consider pegging Aucklander’s annual rate rise to 2.5 per cent while accommodation providers must collect a visitor levy. He also proposes a living wage for council employees and an additional $500,000 towards coordinating work to support homeless Aucklanders. Significant work was also underway at Auckland Council to find efficiencies across the organisation.
