Girls hostel to open soon
Mt Albert Grammar School will be accepting girls as borders for the first time in its history from 2018.
The Auckland co-ed school bought a former rest home in nearby Lloyd Avenue, a residential Mt Albert street, six minutes walk from the school.
The home will be renovated in 2017.
Mt Albert Grammar School (MAGS) was founded in 1922 and will open the hostel for the first intake of up to 30 New Zealand and international girls in 2018.
Headmaster Patrick Drumm said the school has only had a boys hostel and the new facility will provide equal opportunity for girls from outside its zone to attend MAGS.
‘‘MAGS has a long history of offering our quality education to boy students from throughout the North Island,’’ Drumm said.
‘‘Now their sisters, and the daughters of former students, will have the opportunity to also board with us.’’
Board of Trustees chairman Greg Moyle said the ability to host girls from outside the school’s zone complemented other initiatives, such as the development of the AgriBusiness MAGS Farm to promote careers in the primary sector to urban students.
Drumm said MAGS is the second largest high school in New Zealand, with its roll expected to increase to 2800 in 2017.
