Serial shoe thief is a cat

A burglar with a penchant for shoes has been taking footwear from the door steps of Auckland homes.

However, this isn’t your usual type of burglar, rather a four-leggedfeline gaining undetected entry to homes in Onehunga.

Police said over the last few months residents around Grey St have been reporting shoes, clothes and even a tool kit going missing from their door steps.

Onehunga resident, Annette Voll noticed a shoe disappear from her front porch in September.

‘‘The second one disappeared a couple of weeks later and every time it was the left shoe,’’ she said.

Voll found one of their missing shoes behind the shed and another one lodged in a hole in a hedge.

She carried out an investigation and found that a moggy was responsible for a number of the items taken over the past months.

The owner of the cat returned the items along with a bottle of wine as a gesture of goodwill. He said the sneaky kitty is locked inside each night in a hope everyone’s shoes are safe.

This cat isn’t alone with its shoe fetish. In November a fellow feline in Murray’s Bay stole almost 20 shoes.

Back in 2015 a cat called Earl was raiding the homes of the North Shore but his items of choice were socks and ladies underwear.

A cat in Onehunga has been stealing shoes (cat pictured not the culprit).
