The annual Chinese New Year Festival and Market Day returns on Saturday at Greenlane’s ASB Showgrounds. With a history of more than 30 years, the celebration, organised by the Auckland Chinese Community Centre, features the traditions, music, dance, art and food of China. Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Auckland Erwen Xu is expected to open the event with an 11-person dragon dance at 10am. Indoor shows include dance and acrobatics groups from the Liaoning province, who are travelling specially from the north of the Asian country to deliver their professional performances. As well as showcasing Chinese culture, the festival is also a chance to remind new immigrants of the hard work done by senior migrants.
